How to Choose the Right Fabric for Custom Sportswear: A Complete Buyer's Guide

Choosing the wrong fabric is the most expensive mistake a sportswear buyer can make. It leads to returns, complaints and a damaged brand reputation. This guide breaks down the fabrics we use every day in our Sialkot production facility so you can specify your next order with confidence.

Understanding GSM: The Foundation of Fabric Selection

GSM (grams per square meter) tells you how heavy and dense a fabric is. It directly affects durability, drape, breathability and price.

  • 140–160 GSM — lightweight training tees and running singlets for hot climates
  • 180–220 GSM — the sweet spot for team jerseys, polo shirts and gym wear
  • 260–320 GSM — hoodies, tracksuits and fleece for colder markets
  • 320+ GSM — premium heavyweight fleece and winter training wear

A higher GSM is not always better. A 300 GSM jersey would be unwearable on a football pitch, while a 150 GSM hoodie would feel cheap. Match the weight to the end use.

The Core Sportswear Fabrics Explained

Polyester Interlock

The workhorse of teamwear. Smooth on both sides, excellent for sublimation printing, and durable enough for a full season of matches. Most of our custom soccer and basketball uniforms use 180–200 GSM interlock.

Polyester Mesh

Open-knit construction for maximum airflow. Ideal for basketball jerseys, training bibs and side panels where ventilation matters most. Available in micro-mesh and bird-eye variations.

Moisture-Wicking Polyester (Dry-Fit Style)

Engineered yarns pull sweat away from the skin to the fabric surface where it evaporates. Essential for performance sportswear sold in warm markets such as the Middle East, Australia and the southern United States.

Cotton Fleece and French Terry

The standard for hoodies, joggers and sweatshirts. Brushed fleece offers warmth and softness; French terry is lighter with a looped back, popular for premium athleisure brands.

Spandex Blends (Elastane)

Adding 5–15% spandex to polyester or cotton creates the stretch needed for compression wear, leggings, cycling kits and fitted training apparel.

Match the Fabric to the Decoration Method

Your printing or embroidery choice limits your fabric options:

  • Sublimation requires 100% polyester or high-poly blends — it will not bond to cotton
  • Screen printing works on almost anything but sits best on smooth surfaces like interlock
  • Embroidery needs stable, heavier fabrics — lightweight mesh can pucker under dense stitching
  • Heat transfer is versatile but check wash durability on stretch fabrics

Climate and Market Considerations

Selling to Scandinavia is different from selling to the Gulf. Before finalizing fabric, answer three questions:

  1. 1.What is the average temperature where the product will be worn?
  2. 2.Is it for high-intensity sport or casual/athleisure wear?
  3. 3.What do competing brands in that market use?

Our Recommendation Process

When you send us an inquiry, we do not just quote a price. Our team asks about your target market, sport, decoration method and price point — then recommends two or three fabric options with swatches available on request. That way you approve the exact hand-feel before bulk production begins.
